Child Safety

Layers of Protection When it comes to safe guarding your children, "Layers of Protection" are what most everyone can agree on. The more backup strategies you can build into your home protection plan the less likely a failure becomes. The Watchdog Latch was developed to do just that. Be it to protect a child from the busy streets outside the front door, a pool in the back, or poisons in the shop/garage. Adding another layer can be a comfort indeed.

Water Safety Among children ages 1 to 4 years, most drownings occur in residential swimming pools (Brenner et al. 2001). In 2003, there were 3,306 unintentional fatal drownings in the United States, averaging nine people per day. This figure does not include drownings in boating- related incidents (CDC 2005).

Pool Fencing - general guidelines Fencing height should be 5' in height or greater. Avoid horizontal members, children can climb up and over. Gates should open out away from pool area. Use self-latching and self-closing hardware. Avoid large openings within 24" of latch. Keep fence clear of items children can climb. Remove temptations - ball left in pool, etc.

Local Fire Department Check with your local fire department for additional child safety information. Some departments will check your child safety seat, hold CPR classes, or have area specific items to be aware of. Have local emergency numbers handy just in case. Be prepared.
